Case Study: Smart City Data Lake for a European City

Scope of Work

A major European city was seeking to implement a FIWARE-based Data Lake for all of its current and future Smart City initiatives. Trigyn Technologies was selected to implement the core data lake infrastructure as part of the client’s broader Smart City initiative. This initiative aimed to consolidate diverse urban data sources into a harmonized, interoperable environment that supports data-driven policy making, citizen engagement, and sustainability goals.

Background

Like many global cities, the client faced challenges in integrating disparate data sources—from IoT sensors and legacy systems to public APIs and citizen-driven inputs. The city needed a unified platform to collect, harmonize, and visualize context-aware data across mobility, energy, environment, and facility management domains.

Solution

Trigyn deployed a robust, future-proof data lake platform based on FIWARE’s open-source Orion Context Broker. This platform enabled the client to:

• Aggregate real-time and historical data from various sources including IoT sensors, APIs, CSVs, and open government datasets.
• Normalize heterogeneous context data into NGSI v2-compliant models.
• Securely route data into a central Data Lake for long-term analytics, benchmarking, and monitoring.

The Data Lake forms the backbone of their urban data portal, enabling powerful visualizations and contextual intelligence through FIWARE’s Knowage BI tools.
