Job Description:
Our client - a major utility firm - has an immediate need for an Assistant Lab Manager in Albany, NY. The particulars of the position are as follows.
Description:
This position supports lab management activities including day-to-day tasks required for safe, efficient, and productive use of the lab to achieve lab goals, support contracted lab users, and support the on-going viability of the lab. The position requires technical expertise in IT, project management skills, familiarity with power system simulation software licensing and installation, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Job Functions & Responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain a schedule for lab resources including simulation software and hardware across projects conducted at the lab;
• Support the Lab Manager in identifying and mitigating any physical resource constraints;
• Assign available lab resources (workstations, simulators, software licenses, etc.) to projects to avoid conflicts;
• Develop and update resource bookkeeping calendars, available to staff, according to assignments.
Lab maintenance:
• Develop and maintain lab documentations including equipment inventory, lab equipment connection architecture, and list of IPs;
• Fix occasional technical issues with computers, simulation software, and simulation hardware including real-time digital simulators;
• Manage software license renewals as needed. Develop and maintain a list of available software available, update software and renew licenses as needed. The software include industry standard power system simulation tools including but not limited to ASPEN, CYME, DSATools, EMTP, EXATA, GE MAPS, Intel Fortran Compiler, PSLF, PSSE, HyperSim, RT-LAB, LabView, MATLAB, OpenDSS, operating systems, PSCAD, RSCAD, and virtual machine-related software;
• Update firmware as needed. The firmware include but are not limited to real-time digital simulator machines, power amplifiers, renewable energy resource emulators, protective relays, FPGA, and phasor measurement unit;
Skills:
• Technical expertise in IT including server, operating system, software installation and maintenance;
• Excellent personal computing skills, including proficiency with spreadsheets, word processors, databases, and project management software;
• Excellent interpersonal skills; good written and verbal communication skills;
• Ability to work as part of a high-performing team;
• Demonstrated high level of personal motivation, foresight, and good judgment;
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
• Familiarity with licensing and installing industry standard power system simulation tools including ASPEN, CYME, DSATools, EMTP, EXATA, GE MAPS, Intel Fortran Compiler, PSLF, PSSE, HyperSim, RT-LAB, LabView, MATLAB, OpenDSS, operating systems, PSCAD, RSCAD, and virtual machine-related software; as well as simulators like RTDS and/or Opal-RT (ePhasorSim, eMegaSim, HyperSim, eFPGASim)
• Familiarity with electric utility policies, operations, procedures and business objectives.
• M.S. degree in Engineering is a strong advantage, ideally in electrical or computer engineering;
• Other advanced degrees are considered a plus;
• Applicable experience, with an electric utility, power producer, vendor, consultant or energy services company is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
The position is on-site based in Albany, NY. Position requires working with lab electrical/electronic equipment and setting up experiments following safety rules and lab procedures. Position may require lifting and moving items weighting up to 20 lbs on an occasional basis.
Education & Certifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering with a specialty in electrical or computer engineering;
